How to Use This Calculator Effectively (Explanation + FAQ)

This fee calculator helps you accurately calculate products on Shopify, Amazon, and eBay before you go live. Enter the item price, shipping costs, and (optionally) cost of goods – and instantly receive fees, payout, VAT effect, and profit details. The benefit: You don't just see "total fees," but a clear breakdown and a fee ratio that you can evaluate at a glance.

Step-by-step: Choose the platform at the top. Then decide whether your inputs are gross (incl. VAT) or net. In many regions, fees on marketplaces are calculated on the total amount (item plus shipping, often incl. tax) – that's why price and shipping are separate fields. Optionally, store the cost of goods (net) and additional costs per order (e.g., packaging, shipping labels, apps, storage/handling, or advertising). This allows the calculator to show you profit after costs – not just the payout.

Amazon: You can switch between "Professional" (monthly fee) and "Individual" (per unit). For "Professional," you can specify the expected sales per month so that the monthly fee is distributed as a portion per order. The referral fee is percentage-based and varies greatly by category – which is why it is editable. Optionally, enter fulfillment costs, closing fees, or other fees as a fixed amount per unit to make the calculation more realistic.

eBay: For commercial sellers, the final value fee typically consists of a percentage (sometimes tiered) plus a fixed fee per order. The calculator offers presets for common categories (devices, accessories, fashion, etc.) and allows you to switch to "Custom" at any time if you want to enter exact category rates. Listing fees and additional options are optional, as they depend on quotas, offer formats, shop subscriptions, and promotions.

Shopify: Here, variable costs usually depend on payment processing. Set the payment percentage and fixed amount according to your gateway. If you use external payment providers, additional Shopify transaction fees may apply – use Shopify Payments to avoid these additional costs (if suitable for your setup). Subscription costs can optionally be distributed proportionally across orders to see the "true cost per order."

In the Result Dashboard, you see the total amount from the buyer, total fees, payout after fees, a VAT estimate, and net after VAT. With cost of goods and additional costs, you get profit and margin. The donut ring shows you the fee ratio, helping you test prices quickly. Under "Price Target," you can set a target profit or target margin and receive a suggested gross price (estimate).

Updateability: Fee models change. Therefore, all percentage and fixed values are intentionally editable and stored locally. Check official price/fee pages regularly and update the values. This calculator is a planning aid and does not replace tax advice.

Is shipping part of the fee basis?

Often, yes. That's why there is a separate shipping field. If the platform excludes shipping, simply set shipping to 0.

Why does the calculator show VAT and "net after VAT"?

Marketplaces often calculate fees on the gross amount. "Net after VAT" additionally subtracts the VAT contained in the gross amount as an estimate.

How accurate are the Amazon and eBay presets?

They are good starting values. For exact calculations, enter the category- or contract-specific percentages and fixed amounts.

What does "fixed per order" mean on eBay?

The fixed fee is calculated once per checkout order – i.e., when multiple items are purchased together.

What is the Shopify transaction fee?

An additional Shopify fee for external payment providers (in addition to their fees). With Shopify Payments, it is usually 0.

How do I plan for returns?

Define a return rate and calculate it via "extra costs per order" or reduce your target margin. Fees are sometimes not fully refunded.

Can I include advertising, apps, or FBA?

Yes: Use "extra costs" (per order) or the respective optional fee fields (e.g., Fulfillment/FBA) per unit.

Where can I find official fee information?

Sources (verify current status): Amazon Pricing, eBay Fees, Shopify Payments.
