Understanding Civil Service Pay: A/B/W/R, Steps, Part-time & Family Allowance
Civil service pay in Germany is not a uniform tariff, but a system of different salary schedules and tables. Depending on the employer (Federal government or specific Federal State), amounts, adjustment dates, and individual allowances may vary. This calculator provides a quick orientation: it determines a monthly base salary based on the selected salary schedule (A/B/W/R), salary grade, and—if provided—step. Optionally, you can add a family allowance. The result is transparently broken down (base salary, family allowance, total) and additionally shown as annual values (×12).
Salary Schedule A concerns the classic career paths (e.g., administration, police, justice, school) and is structured into grades like A3 to A16. Here, there are mostly steps that increase with growing experience. Salary Schedule B (B1 to B11) often stands for high-level leadership functions; in many tables, these are fixed monthly amounts without steps. Salary Schedule W (W1 to W3) applies predominantly to professors; here too, base amounts are typically fixed or follow specific regulations. Salary Schedule R (R1 to R10) is used primarily in the judicial area and also often works with steps.
Part-time calculation: The base salary is converted via a part-time factor. If you work 80%, for example, the full-time base salary is multiplied by 0.80. For an optional hourly wage, the monthly value is divided by the average monthly hours (weekly hours × 52 / 12). This is a mathematical approximation.
Family Allowance: Actual regulations are complex. In this calculator, the family allowance is therefore deliberately modeled in a simplified way: you choose a neutrally phrased claim variant, enter the number of children, and can optionally activate an increased rate from the 3rd child if stored in the dataset.
Transparency & Limits: This calculator is for orientation only and is not legal advice. For binding information, the official salary tables, legal regulations, and your personnel office are decisive.
