Why LocalCalcs Exists
Falk — Developer & Creator
Berlin, Germany · Web developer since 2012
LocalCalcs started as a personal side project. As a developer living in Germany, I kept running into the same problem: the calculators and tools available online were either too vague, buried in dark-pattern ad sites, or — most often — only available in German. Friends from abroad asking about net salaries, company car taxes, or parental leave kept getting the same answer: "there's a tool for that, but it's in German."
So I built my own. What started as a salary calculator grew into a larger collection covering personal finance, German tax specifics, music production utilities, crypto tracking, and lifestyle planning tools — each with plain-English explanations designed for people who want to understand the answer, not just copy a number.
LocalCalcs is not a startup, a funded product, or a team of fifty. It is one developer who builds tools he actually uses himself, explained as clearly as possible for an international audience — including the many non-German speakers who live, work, and make financial decisions in Germany every day.

Our Methodology: How Every Calculator is Made
- Start with official sourcesEvery calculator uses rates, thresholds, and formulas from official sources: German federal law (EStG, SGB, BEHG), official government publications (Bundesfinanzministerium, Deutsche Rentenversicherung, BMWK), EU directives, and where applicable, peer-reviewed academic sources for financial formulas.
- Verify with real-world examplesResults are cross-checked against known outcomes — for example, German salary calculators are validated against Brutto-Netto calculators published by established German financial institutions and payroll software outputs. Music tools are tested against professional DAW outputs. Edge cases (contribution ceilings, special rules like the Saxony PV split) are explicitly handled rather than ignored.
- Write plain-English explanationsEvery calculator comes with a written explanation of what the result means, what assumptions were made, and where the numbers come from. A number without context is not useful — the explanation is as important as the calculation itself.
- Update annually (and when laws change)German tax rates, contribution ceilings, and energy levies change regularly. All rate-sensitive calculators are reviewed and updated at the start of each calendar year, and whenever mid-year legislative changes (like BEHG CO₂ price updates) take effect. The last update year is shown on each affected calculator page.
What We Stand For
Privacy by design
No calculation data is sent to a server. Everything runs in your browser — your salary, your portfolio, your debts are never transmitted or stored. The only local storage used is for optional features like saving favourites, and it never leaves your device.
Transparency over black-box results
We show our work. Every calculator explains the formula used, the data sources, and the assumptions made. You should be able to reproduce the result manually if you wanted to — and the explanation should teach you something, not just give you a number to paste somewhere.
Free, forever
LocalCalcs is funded by display advertising (Google AdSense). That means every tool is free with no registration, no paywalls, and no premium tier. The tradeoff is ads — which we aim to keep unobtrusive. No popups, no interstitials, no "disable your adblocker" walls.
Built for international users in Germany
Many financial tools for Germany are only available in German and assume German as a native language. LocalCalcs is specifically designed for the large and growing population of international professionals, students, expats, and remote workers who live in Germany but navigate it in English.
Important disclaimer: LocalCalcs provides calculators and informational content for educational purposes only. Nothing on this site constitutes legal, tax, financial, or professional advice. Results are based on publicly available data and general formulas — individual circumstances vary. For decisions with significant financial or legal consequences, always consult a qualified professional (Steuerberater, Rechtsanwalt, or financial adviser licensed in your jurisdiction). German tax law in particular changes frequently — always verify current rates with official sources before making decisions.
