Explanation & FAQ (brief but very useful)
With this 2026 Commuter Allowance Calculator, you can calculate the distance allowance for travel between your home and primary place of work. The distance allowance is part of professional expenses (Werbungskosten) and can reduce your taxable income. The calculator provides two main results: (1) the deductible distance allowance based on your input and (2) a rough estimate of how much of it will likely have an additional tax effect. This is helpful because many commuters enter their kilometers but notice little difference in the end, as the standard employee allowance is already automatically considered.
2026 Calculation: For trips starting from 01.01.2026, a flat rate of 0.38 $ applies per full distance kilometer and workday. Only the one-way distance (Home → Work) counts, not the round trip. The allowance can only be claimed once per workday, even if you drive to the workplace multiple times a day. "Full kilometer" means: Decimals are rounded down (e.g., 12.9 km is treated as 12 km). Example: 15 km one-way and 210 office days result in 15 × 210 × 0.38 $ = 1,197 $.
Value-added Options: You can subtract home office days so that only days with actual travel are counted. Additionally, you choose your means of transport. In principle, the distance allowance is limited to 4,500 $ per year. However, this upper limit does not apply if you use your own car or a car provided for your use (e.g., a company car). For bicycles, walking, or other means of transport, the cap usually applies. The calculator transparently shows whether a cap is active and makes the difference visible.
Public Transport Bonus: If you commute by train or bus, you can also enter your annual ticket costs. If the provable costs exceed the deductible distance allowance, the higher amount can be taken into account. This is particularly relevant for expensive job tickets, subscriptions, or regional transit tickets. For the standard flat rate, you usually don't need receipts; for higher public transport costs, you should keep proof.
Tax Reality: The standard employee allowance (Werbungskostenpauschbetrag) is 1,230 $ per year and is automatically considered in your income tax deduction. An additional tax advantage often only arises if your total professional expenses (commuter allowance + work equipment + training, etc.) exceed 1,230 $. This is exactly why you can add "other professional expenses" in the calculator. The calculator then computes the difference between "without commuter allowance" and "with commuter allowance" so you can see what the commute actually adds.
Estimated Tax Savings: Adjust your marginal tax rate (e.g., 25–42%). This allows for an approximation: additional deduction × marginal tax rate. This is not an exact tax calculation (progression, solidarity surcharge, church tax, and special cases are not fully modeled), but it is very good for comparisons and what-if scenarios like more home office, part-time work, moving closer to work, or a ticket subscription vs. individual tickets.
Note for Context: This calculator models the standard case for a "primary place of work". Travel to changing work locations, business trips, or maintaining a secondary household may be treated differently for tax purposes. Special rules (e.g., for recognized disabilities) are not considered here. Use the result as a solid orientation for planning, budgeting, and preparing your tax return.
FAQ
Does the round trip count?
No, only the one-way distance between your home and primary place of work counts.
What is a "primary place of work"?
Usually the main work location assigned to you in your contract (not every changing deployment site).
Which route can I use?
In principle, the shortest connection; a longer route that is more convenient for traffic may be permissible if it is used regularly and objectively saves time.
Does the allowance also apply to bicycles or walking?
Yes, the distance allowance is independent of the means of transport.
Is there an upper limit?
Yes, usually 4,500 $ per year – except when using your own car or a company car.
I commute by train/bus: What do I claim?
At least the flat rate; if ticket costs are higher, the higher amount can be claimed (keep receipts).
How many workdays are realistic?
Often 210–230 days for full-time. Enter your actual office days (subtract vacation/sick leave/business trips/home office).
What about home office?
There is no commuter allowance for home office days; however, a home office flat rate may apply (not calculated here).
Why does the calculator show an "Additional Deduction"?
Because only professional expenses exceeding 1,230 $ reduce your taxes further. The calculator shows the additional impact of the commuter allowance.
Do I have to prove the distance?
Usually, stating it is sufficient; if there are questions, printouts from route planners or a short note about a traffic-efficient route help.
What about multiple trips on the same day?
For the distance allowance, basically only one trip per workday to the primary place of work is counted.
